北京时间10月10日，2009中国网球公开赛展开男单半决赛的争夺。赛会头号种子、西班牙名将纳达尔在中心球场对阵克罗地亚小将西里奇，结果西里奇直落两盘以6-1和6-3爆冷淘汰头号种子。
本场比赛是纳达尔和西里奇职业生涯的首次交锋。
首盘比赛，西里奇率先发球，轻松保发。而纳达尔的首个发球局就遭到西里奇的挑战。第二局，纳达尔的3次一发一分没得，西里奇凭借凶猛的攻击率先取得破发。 第三局，西里奇再次直落四分保发后，将比分拉开为3-0。第六局，西里奇进攻出现失误，纳达尔借机保住发球局，从而艰难破蛋，将比分追为1-5。第七局， 西班牙小子终于得到两分，但是还是难以完成破发，第一盘比赛仅仅持续了22分钟。最终纳达尔以1-6丢掉首盘。
第二盘比赛，克罗地亚人展开强力正手进攻，纳达尔抵不住压力，又被对手拿到三个破发点，头号种子挽救了其中的两个后，仍被对手破发。第二局，纳达尔通过挑 战鹰眼成功将比分咬住为30-40，但是西里奇网前施压成功保发。第三局，纳达尔在自己发球局再次0-40落后，随后他通过发球落点的变化连续追分逆转保 发。第七局，纳达尔在拿到局点的情况下主动失误增多，西里奇再度取得破发，以5-2领先进入发球胜赛局，西里奇在第八局自己的发球胜赛局浪费了2个赛点， 被纳达尔逆转破发。第九局，克罗地亚小将拿到三个破发点兼赛点，破发此局。最终以6-3赢下第二盘。
本场比赛共耗时1小时22分钟，西里奇以总比分2比0战胜纳达尔，晋级中网男单决赛。
How come I expected too much from Nadal who just came back from abdominal injury ?
He's not good enough at the moment and need more matches to find his level return to the height.
Hopefully he can fight back to win the trophy in Shanghai 1000 ATP next week.
I like his tennis and his shot.
He is a very nice person with positive attitude and always humble on and off the court.
It's not his lucky year cause on the injuries he was suffering after winning his first Australia Grand Slam at the beginning in January.
After that, he lost the other three Grand Slams : French Open, Wimbledon & US Open.
(sound like the Australia Grand Slam is a curse on the winner!)
